The problem was with my windows/linux dual boot system refusing to boot, and these systems are notorious for having intractable problems. While the computer itself is not fixed yet, he has mapped out a plan for me to fix it myself, and just charged a basic call out fee for the couple of hours he took troubleshooting this difficult case. You can find out a lot about linux problems/solutions just by googling, but sometimes it gets too overwhelming and you just need a live person to help you wade through it and get you on track.
